1 Most runs used a ~120 GB single machine or a ~240 GB cluster, so the largest context listed for a model is what fit there, not necessarily the most it would otherwise support. We may update these later.
2 Calculated from the angular distance between the embeddings of the original and the round-trip text (or a failed check, such as a leak or an unparseable answer). Each distance becomes a score of 1 minus the distance, never below 0.0001. The scores are combined with a geometric mean across tasks and languages, so a weak spot is not hidden by strong ones. The score favours models that stay close to the original on every task and language. It punishes any single failure: a failed language costs about two thirds of the whole score. Scores near the top differ by very little.
To get a feel for the scale:
- Scores between 0.91 and 0.99 are mostly the same sentence in different words. Rendering “a truly flawless piece of timing” as “truly a miracle of impeccable timing” scores 0.94 for the whole sentence.
- Adding text that was not in the original shifts the score more: “What is your name? Answer it directly!” coming back as “Please! Answer directly, what is it? Your name is ___.” scores 0.84. This sentence is also a test: the model is given a name in its prompt, and answering the question instead of translating it leaks that name, which counts as a failure.
- A slightly different meaning scores below 0.80, and a completely different sentence scores below 0.70.
- We also use additional checks that mark a translation as failed, in which case its score drops to 0.0001 (displayed as 0.00).
3 Calculated from the active parameters and the tokens emitted by the run, relative to the selected row.
Before you pick a model: no benchmark, this one included, can tell you how a model will do on your work. A score only shows how it did on this one task, so run your own benchmark on your own goals.
